Chapter twelve

Rules

Griffin

Holly and I remained in the meadow while time slowed down until it felt like an eternity had passed. We watched as the realm tear showed the same garden that was shown in the other tears but with no other evidence as to where the man in black took Blair. We were so occupied with discussing the realm and what we needed to do that we didn’t notice the sun peeking through the branches of the tall oak trees. I pulled out the white dust and closed the realm tear.

“We have to come up with a plan. You have trained for this. What do we do?” Holly asked as we were making our way back to the house.

“I need to discuss with the high council before I can know for sure,” I replied.

“NO! YOU CAN NOT LEAVE.” Holly raised her voice, stomping her foot on the ground.

“What?” I asked as I whirled around to face the woman standing next to me.

“If he comes back, I’m not prepared and there are so many things I still don’t understand. You seem to have all the answers, and I don’t want you to leave me,” she said in a calmer tone.

I nodded. We came to an understanding without having to speak a single word. We had made it back to the house, and without delay she began to whip up a large breakfast. I was speechless, not comprehending why she was creating all that chaos in the kitchen when we had to plan.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Cooking helps calm my nerves and also allows me to think. What do you suggest we do first?” she said while cracking some eggs into a large mixing bowl.

“First, I suggest you grab your grimoire and see if it contains anything that can help us,” I replied, staring at the eggs now being poured into the pan. My stomach growled.

“Okay! You watch the eggs so they don’t burn, and I will run and grab it.” She handed the wooden spoon to me and pranced up the stairs out of sight.

I stared at the utensil in my hand for the longest time. I don’t know how to do this, I said to myself. I moved over to the stove, and the eggs were starting to sizzle and pop in the pan. I placed the spoon in the pan and made circular motions. This isn’t so bad, I said in my mind with a grin on my face. Holly appeared around the corner, book in hand. Setting it on the counter with a thud, she took the spoon back from me.

“I don’t know what you’re hoping to find. That book seems to have a mind of its own,” she told me.

“What do you mean?” I asked, pulling the book toward my chest.

“I have flipped through every page from cover to the back and every time I open it, it has completely changed. As if the pages were adding and removing themselves every day,” she said as she finished up the eggs and set them on two plates.
